May reviews Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream

photo of garnier night creamA 'miracle' cream? That's quite a claim! As if anything could live up to that... So I thought when I opened a My Little Box a couple of months ago and saw this Garnier product.

Still, cynicism aside, I was on the look out for a new night cream and couldn't say no to something that made these promises:

"Its innovative, self-smoothing texture envelops the skin and visibly helps reduce the appearance of signs of fatigue during the night.
Visible results from the 1st morning:
• Skin feels intensely re-hydrated.
• Skin looks less tired.
• Complexion looks fresh and radiant.

When used every night, the formula helps reduce the appearance of the signs of ageing and tiredness.

The formula helps stimulate surface skin cell renewal for skin that looks refreshed and less tired. Skin looks smoother, wrinkles appear reduced and skin feels firmer, as if transformed."

Mack and May on a gut cleanse programme #3 Week Two of our gut cleansing experience

We’ve made it to the half way point in our 28-day gut cleansing programme inspired by Dr Junger's book "Clean Gut"….hurrah!

If you missed our previous posts, have a look here (introduction to the programme) and here (how week 1 went).

May reviews Hema - for home decor, stationery, beauty and more

hema logoIt is not too often that I come across a chain of shops in the UK that I have never heard of but that is exactly what happened a few weeks ago with Hema.

Hema is Dutch in origin and has three stores in England - although they are nowhere near me so I have only discovered the online shop

Hema states that its aim is "to make daily life easier and fun by making the ordinary extraordinary with products that shine with brilliant simplicity". Sounds good!

I was pleasantly surprised when I started looking at Hema's online shop, not only for their huge range of products but also their prices - for the most part these are really reasonable...think along the lines of Tiger pricing, if you are familiar with that.

Mack and May on a gut cleanse programme #2 Week One of our gut cleansing experience

Week 1 of our (exotically titled) gut cleanse is all done….and we’re alive and well!

If you have seen last week’s post you will be aware that we are doing a 28 day gut cleanse programme inspired by the Clean Gut book by Dr Alejandro Junger.

Last week we gave you the whats and whys, and this week we’re discussing how the first week went.

Mack reviews the Brush DJ App (with help of her kids!)

Brush DJ App
I liked to think my kids were good at brushing their teeth properly. That is until the last trip to the dentist when I was told that my youngest son would need a small filling at the tender age of 6. I suspect fruit juice, Haribo and not brushing for long enough are the main culprits.
I bought cute and colourful sand timers to ensure the children brushed their teeth for a full two minutes (as recommended by our dentist) but the novelty of the sand timers unfortunately wore off after a few weeks.

When I recounted my family's dental woes to May, she told me about an app she had recommended to her young niece and nephew - Brush DJ, which is available free to download for iOS and Android platforms.

Mack and May on a gut cleanse programme #1 The introduction and preparation

Following "Clean Gut" by Dr Junger
A couple of weeks ago, we were moaning to each other about feeling sluggish and tired, and that we hoped this wasn’t just the way we had to feel as we, erm, had increasing numbers of candles on our birthday cakes…Ever hopeful, we launched ourselves into some internet research and decided that maybe a gut cleanse was the way to go (ooh, sounds so exotic…). Neither of us are great at sticking to diets for more than a few days at a time (or a few hours to be more precise) but we thought that if we were both doing it at the same time we just might be able to spur each other on. The cleanse entails a 21 day elimination phase and further 7 day reintroduction phase. We’ll be doing a weekly update so stick with us and we’ll let you know how we get on and whether we’d recommend it if you are looking for something similar.

Mack and May's traditional wedding anniversary gift ideas - the first 5 years

photo of wedding organiser wedding certificate and horseshoeAs both of us have been married for over 5 years, we thought it would be fun to share our ideas for wedding anniversary gifts for your partner (or to drop subtle hints about you might like to receive yourself).

Each anniversary from year 1 to 15 and then every 5 years from there have traditional gift meanings and we have spent many an hour searching around for something suitable to fit the appropriate theme each year so keep reading to have a look at what we found...or wish we had found.

There are also 'modern' themes for each year which you can find easily with a quick look online, and the US has different themes to the UK. We've looked at UK only because, well, we live there!

Mack and May's City Break Essentials

photo of city break essentialsWe both love foreign city breaks. They give us a real opportunity to recharge  our batteries and escape from our normal lives for a couple of days, all while indulging our shopping habit and allowing us to explore new places and discover new restaurants.

Neither of us can say that they have perfectly mastered the art of packing light (we’re working on it!) but we have honed down our list of essential items that we always make sure we have with us when we’re heading off an a city break.

Mack's Top Three YouTubers to cheer you up

Whenever I need to zone-out and relax after a hard day's work or find something to put a smile on my face, I usually turn to one of two things:  online shopping or YouTube video browsing.

Given that online shopping can be quite counter-productive (as the credit card bill doesn't exactly make me smile), here are some of my firm favourites on YouTube which are either guaranteed to leave me in a fit of hysterics or seriously entertained.

If you haven't checked them out already, what are you waiting for?!?

May on Boots Botanics Facial Oil and Shine Away Mattifying Day Cream...and a GIVEAWAY!

photo of botanics facial oil and day creamA few weeks ago I posted about the Botanics Triple Hydrating Eye Serum. As I was so impressed with the product, I hunted out some other products from the range and decided to give those a go.

The two that I picked up were the Organic Facial Oil and the Shine Away Mattifying Day Cream, with SPF15. As I mentioned in my previous post, the Botanics bods work with Kew Gardens with a view to using plant extracts that are proven to work.

Carry on reading for my thoughts on the Facial Oil and Day Cream and details of an opportunity for you to win these products...

May's review of - list making and organisation heaven?

photo of trello app screen shotWhilst I could quite happily live my life never downloading a game for my phone, show me an app or website that promises to revolutionise the art of list making, or get Mack and me hyper-organised on the blogging front, and I'm in (as long as it's free, that is...)!

I have tried a few recently, with pretty much no success, either because a particular app just isn't very user friendly (and therefore makes my life more complicated, which is exactly the opposite of what I need it for) or it doesn't offer my anything more than the notes section that comes preloaded with most phones.

One, however, has lasted a bit longer and that is I can't recall where I first saw this mentioned but it was definitely on a beauty/lifestyle blog and I'm definitely very grateful to have read it...if it was your blog, thank you!

Mack reviews Season 1 of The Affair (plus Season 2 trailer) starring Dominic West and Ruth Wilson

Mack reviews The AffairFor the last few months I have been hooked on season one of the American drama "The Affair" which stars the brilliant and talented Dominic West, Ruth Wilson and Joshua Jackson.  I initially tuned in to the ten-episode long drama (which won a Golden Globe award for Best Television Drama) after seeing a brief trailer which promised to offer more than the obvious story line of an extra-marital affair.  It is an intriguing mix of passionate "Romeo and Juliet", provocative "Basic Instinct", a touch of "X-Files" mystery and the thriller-style of "True Detective".  A story of passion intermingled with tragedy, and cleverly told through the eyes of the two main characters, Noah and Alison, with the assistance of a sharp, sly yet deadpan detective who is determined to unravel the truth.

May's French Sephora beauty haul - skincare, sheet masks and eyes (inc mini review)

skin care products from sephora - haul and reviewIf you follow us on twitter (@mackandmay) you may have noticed that I was in France recently. Of course I had to stop in at least a couple of Sephora branches....

I set some serious ground rules and didn't allow myself to buy any high-end products, and also promised myself that I wouldn't buy any make up. I'll save those for another day!

I still had fun looking around and couldn't resist buying a few Sephora own brand bits to try out.

Here's what I ended up with:

Mack reviews Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing GelIt was by sheer chance that I found this product.  It was Bonus Time at Clinique in Boots and there I was deciding which third product I should buy in order to get a cute box of free goodies.  I had my Superbalanced foundation (which I have loved for many years) and a new lipstick from the Colour Surge Butter Shine Range (which I also adore), and for my third product, I wanted something to help keep oil and blemishes at bay.  The lovely assistant at Clinique recommended this purifying gel which contains salicylic acid and cost £20 for a 30ml bottle.

Mack & May's essential handbag beauty products

photo of products in handbagIf you're anything like us, there will be certain items which never leave your handbag.

Money, keys, mobile etc are all pretty standard but what are your other essentials? Do you carry tons of make up with you wherever you go? Do you have items which you daren't take out 'just in case'?

We have tipped our bags upside down and listed below what we can't do without... come and have a nose around! We haven't mentioned the boring stacks of credit cards and wotnot, and May was so ashamed at how many lipsticks she found in the bottom of her bag that we decided not to deal with make up either (that's a whole post in itself), but here are the bits and bobs which we carry around with us on a daily basis.

Mack reviews Ancol's BB Cologne For Dogs

ancol BB dog cologneThis week I am reviewing a cross between two of my favourite things at the moment…dogs and fragrance.

Hanna isn’t a particularly smelly dog as I bath her every few weeks and keep her clean in between baths with pet wipes. However, I was inspired to buy a bottle of dog cologne for Hanna to help keep the doggy odours at bay after Hanna was sprayed at the groomers with a dog cologne which smelt gorgeous and lasted for days.

I am not sure which cologne the groomer used (I will find out) but I have splashed out £6.50 on the BB Dog cologne by Ancol, on sale on eBay.

May's ideas for wedding gift shopping on a budget

photo of wedding magazines
With wedding season almost here, our thoughts have been turning to what to buy as wedding gifts for some of our friends who are tying the knot this summer.

Some couples will have a specific gift list and some will ask for cash, in which case you may feel that your options are limited, but if you have free reign to shop off-list, the choices are pretty much unlimited and it can be hard to know where to start.

If you're shopping on a budget (especially if you are already committing to significant cost in attending the wedding), it is not made any easier.

There are some great gifts that you can pick up for really reasonable prices. I have listed some below, all of which come in at under £30.

I hope they give you some inspiration!

Mack reviews Barkbeats (with the help of Hanna the Puppy)

Barkbeats May 2015 box
Our eager assistant, Hanna, the 6 month old puppy is loving my newly found obsession with dog subscription boxes. Like many of you out there, I love the buzz of discovering new, unique products which I would otherwise probably not get to know about or try. Dog subscription boxes have the added bonus of allowing us to spoil our beloved pooches a little bit more!

We were sent Barkbeats May box to review. Barkbeats offer a monthly surprise box with toys, treats and grooming products (and free delivery)! The box is tailored to your size of dog- small, medium or large and costs from £13.50 to £14.90 depending on whether you buy a one-off box or 6 or 12 month subscription.

Here's what we thought...

Mack reviews Lily's Kitchen (with the help of Hanna the Puppy)

Lily's Kitchen puppy foodHanna is back this week to help me review Lily’s Kitchen puppy food. For those of you who are new to Hanna, she is my 6 month old Chihuahua cross Yorkie puppy…and she loves her food.  However, if you are anything like me, you will know that it can be difficult to know which is the best food to choose for your puppy.

I have to admit, Lily’s Kitchen is one of those brands that I have seen around on the supermarket and pet stores shelves, heard good things about but never got round to buying for Hanna.  Therefore, I was delighted to receive a sample puppy pack from Lily’s Kitchen to review.

May's Fathers Day Gift Ideas 2015

Is it just me, or are dads the hardest people to buy for? Once you have got past the age of buying novelty socks or ties (sorry Dad, but bless you for wearing them!), and unless you have a dad who is good at dropping hints about what he wants, inspiration is not always easy to find.

I remember wishing many times that my Dad would take up golf as so many 'gifts for men' were aimed at golfers!

With Fathers Day in the UK coming up soon (21 June, in case you needed a reminder!), here are my current top 5 gifts covering a range of budgets. I hope they give you some ideas!

Mack and Hanna the Puppy review Top Collar - a dog treat subscription box

Top CollarIf you have read our Puppy Haul post, you will know that I am the proud owner of a 6 month old puppy called Hanna. Now, Hanna loves her treats which are handy for encouraging her with basic obedience training at home, keeping her diet varied and interesting and showing her just how much I love her!

I love the concept of subscription boxes. After starting to work my way through all the beauty boxes out there, I am so excited to start trying the pet subscription boxes which seem to growing in number in the UK. The first box that Hanna and I are reviewing is the dog treat subscription box from Top Collar.

Top Collar provide a natural dog treat subscription box, where you get a box of fresh and nutritious treats every two weeks for £4.49 per box (with a current offer on for £2.99 for your first starter box) or you can take out a monthly subscription for a gift box of mixed treats and pay in advance for 3 months (£14.99) or 6 months (£26.99).

Mack reviews facial exfoliating scrubs - Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off Formula vs B.Refined Exfoiliating Cleanser

Exfoiliating scrub; face scrub; clinique; superdrugWith my combination to oily skin, I find that I do benefit from a daily exfoliating scrub to help keep blemishes and blackheads at bay.  If I don't scrub, I soon find that my foundation doesn't go on as smoothly and little spotty bumps and flaky patches can start appearing on my skin.  I have been a loyal user of Clinique's 7 Day Scrub Cream Rise Off Formula which costs £19 for 100ml (price as at the date of this post) and I will talk it about in further depth in a moment.  However, on my last shopping trip I found a much cheaper exfoliating cleanser/scrub which I thought I would try for comparison purposes.  It's the B.Refined Exfoliating Cleanser which I discovered in Superdrug for £5.49 for 125ml (price as at the date of this post).  I do love a bargain!  It would be great to be quids in if I was able to find a cheaper alternative which happened to be just as good (or possibly even better) than my usual buy!

I used the Clinique product daily for one week and the B.Refined product daily the next week - here's how they faired....

May reviews Botanics Triple Age Renewal Hydrating Eye Serum

photo of hydrating eye serumI have been on the look out for a good eye cream for a while - one that hydrates and tackles lines but doesn't cost a fortune. A few weeks ago I was scouring the shelves in Boots and spotted the Triple Age Renewal Hydrating Eye Serum from Botanics. Retailing normally at £9.99 but then on sale for only £4.99, I couldn't resist.

I was also intrigued by the reference on the packaging to Kew Gardens - it seems that Boots are working with experts at Kew to ensure that they are using quality plant extracts and choosing the right plants to give the most effective skincare benefits. They also seek to ensure that the ingredients are ethically sourced.

Mack & May on National Doughnut Week!

photo of doughnut ingredients
Happy National Doughnut Week! If that is not a cause for celebration, we don't know what is!

National Doughnut Week, aside from being an excuse to eat doughnuts, is in aid of The Childrens' Trust, the UK's leading charity for children with brain injuries, so we felt it was a very worthwhile cause for us to highlight. You can find more info on the charity here.

So, we decided that we would try and make our own doughnuts. Neither of us have ever attempted this before and neither of us are willing to own up to setting the challenge. Having now completed the attempt, I think it is fair to say that neither of us will be rushing back to do it again any time soon!

Here are the recipes we used, and the 'interesting' results of our attempts...

May on National Etiquette Week

be nice or leave photoI read in a magazine recently that this week is National Etiquette Week. I think that may be in the United States only, but it did get me thinking about what etiquette means to us today. Is it the stuff of Debretts and the like, or is it something that should be ingrained in all of us as a matter of common courtesy?
I'd love to know your views on the subject. What does etiquette mean to you? Do you see good manners more often than bad? Do you think the younger generation is better or worse than their elders?
Like many, I am a stickler for good manners. My 'pet peeves' are mostly manners related. Litterbugs and pavement hoggers drive me mad!

Here are a couple of my thoughts on the subject...

May's Homeware Haul - H&M, Sass & Belle, Sainsburys

photo of tin heartWith the change in seasons,  I've been on a mini shopping spree to get a few new things for my home.

I am a massive fab of H&M for homeware and over the last few months have found quite a few bits in my local Sainsburys (mainly kitchen items) too. I have also recently discovered the Sass & Belle website.

The following are the most recent things that I've bought. I think I've been having a bit of a blue moment!

Mack reviews None*

I have discovered something this week that has intrigued me, got me addicted and really frustrated me at the same time...the app None*.

What is None*? It is a mysterious quiz game app with no sounds, no pictures...just a black and white screen with cryptic riddles for you to solve. You are given a clue and a keyboard to type in your answers. That's it! You can guess as many times as you want and if you are anything like me, you will be guessing and guessing until you need cocktail sticks to keep your eyelids open!

May's holiday reading list

photo of bookshelf and books
As this post is published the plan is that I am lazing by a pool drinking fresh fruit juice and wondering whether to bother doing anything for the day. A relaxing mini-break is much overdue so hubby and I are disappearing for a few days to, hopefully, some sunshine and little else.

Our plan very much revolves around R&R so we have packed a few books to engross ourselves in.  Whilst he has gone down the sci-fi path, my choices are much more based in history and romance.

Someone once told me that men like made up stories about the future and women like true stories about the past. Obviously that's a sweeping generalisation and not true for everyone, but I think it is for us! Here are my choices, some of which are on my kindle and some of which I've bought in paperback...

May's tips for nervous flyers

Photo of view from plane window
OK, so I am in no way medically or scientifically qualified. What follows are simply some tips from one nervous flyer to (maybe)another, in the hope that it will help to make your next flight a little easier.

Of course, you could sign up for a nervous flyer course, see your doctor about taking medication, learn the science behind flying or try hypnotherapy (or Mack's tactic of downing a few G&Ts, if you're old enough and not driving after you land*...), but the following has helped me out on a few occasions. As it is now only a few days until my next flight, I hope they will not let me down!

Anyway, on to the tips...

Mack's Puppy Products Haul

So chuffed here - I get to blog about 2 of my favourite things at the moment - puppies and shopping!    Prior to getting my little puppy a month or so ago (the chihuahua cross yorkie pictured above), I extensively researched what was out there on the pet products market, what was generally recommended for good puppy and dog care by the experts and dog owners on various dog/pet forums and finally, where the best bargains were to be found.  Here are some of the things I bought for my puppy and my thoughts on these products now that I have had a few weeks to try them!  Prices stated are as at April 2015.

May reviews L'Oreal Infallible 24h Matte Foundation

picture of foundation I haven't tried a new foundation in a while as, along with jeans, it's one of my least favourite things to shop for.

Nonetheless, when I saw L'Oreal's new 'Infallible' offering, I took advantage of a 3 for 2 offer in Boots (it is normally priced at £7.99) and went for it.

This foundation promises '24h matte', medium texture and high coverage. I'm not sure who would need a foundation to last for 24 hours, but you never know...

May makes easy Easter cupcakes

picture of finished cupcakesI love to bake cupcakes and what better reason than Easter, which is the perfect excuse to indulge. This recipe is super quick and easy. I make the cakes by hand, but they would be even easier if you used a mixer. They would also look far more professional if the icing was piped on.

The best bit is the surprise of the chocolate eggs in the middle of the cakes.

Mack and May's Kiko haul

Two women, one lunch break, each armed with about £30 each to spend on some new make-up.  They headed to Kiko.

Mack wanted to stock up on lipsticks and find a long-lasting eyeshadow for daywear. May wanted another eyeshadow stick, having fallen in love with one already, and a nail base coat.

Here are the results of their raid of Kiko...

May reviews Achica

When I moved house last year, a colleague suggested I looked at Achica for some bits and pieces. I had seen the adverts on television but never really given it much thought. Seeing as I needed all sorts from cushions to sideboards and bathroom units, I thought I’d give it a try.

If you haven’t come across it before, Achica is marketed as a ‘members only luxury lifestyle store’. Registration is free.
Achica’s main selling point is that products are available at heavily discounted prices – sometimes up to 70% or thereabouts, although that seems to be rare. The discounts appear to be genuine when compared to the RRPs of products, but of course they may also be on sale elsewhere and I am not aware that Achica promises to be the cheapest place to shop.

Mack on Disney holidays

Before I had children, I would literally cringe when I heard adults talking about Disney.  I think that is because my childhood was Disney-starved (although rich in many other great things).  Tinkerbell must have sprinkled some kind of mind-altering fairy dust on me when I had kids, as, over the years, I have become a huge fan of all things Disney…particularly Disney holidays.  I hope to spread some of that fairy dust with you and share why I love Disney holidays so much!

May's last minute gift ideas

We've all  been there - the days completely get away from you and you run out of time to go shopping and post a gift out to a loved one. I have found some gifts that we think are fantastic and can be bought online and delivered super quickly (as long as you know the recipient's email address, in most cases) and have listed my top picks below. We hope they give you some inspiration.

Mack and May's favourite Lush bath products

Ever since we have know each other, we have been huge fans of Lush's bath products.  There is nothing more relaxing than locking yourself away and indulging in a "Lush bath" and glass of wine (or as tee-total May prefers, Shloer), with candles on as your skin soaks up the goodness from the amazingly-scented Lush products.
Every one to two months, we will either venture to our local Lush store and stock-up on our favourite items or place a large order from Lush's online shop.  The great thing about buying in store is that the staff at Lush are passionate about the products they sell and keen to help you find the best items for your needs and preferences.  Plus, the shop is simply a delight to the senses with the amazing smells and vibrant coloured fresh handmade products.
We have also found that Lush are great at giving product advice if you send them a Tweet.  And, of course, it is great that Lush is against animal testing, is 100% vegetarian and has an ethical buying policy.

May reviews The Body Shop Cleansing Oil

picture of the body shop camomile cleansing oilWhen it comes to removing make up and cleansing my face in the evenings, I have been pretty loyal to Liz Earle's Hot Cloth Cleanse and Polish for a couple of years now, and love it. Recently, however, curiosity got the better of me and I went on an online spending spree at The Body Shop. One of the items I picked up was the Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil.

The Body Shop says of this:

"This silky-soft cleanser will effortlessly remove make-up from the whole face quickly and effectively, leaving skin feeling clean, refreshed and clear of impurities. It’s the ultimate time-saver.
  • Removes make-up
  • Suitable for sensitive skin and contact lens wearers
  • Removes waterproof make-up
  • Leaves skin feeling clean and refreshed"

May on learning to live with eczema

I am very grateful that eczema didn't trouble me as a child or a teenager (there were plenty of other things to worry about then!) but suddenly being hit with it in my mid-30s has come as a bit of a shock.

I only developed eczema a few months ago but it was already had a big impact on my everyday life. I don't know what triggered it, and I certainly don't know how to fix it. I am currently waiting on some allergy test results to see if there's something in particular that is affecting me. Whilst my optimistic streak occasionally tells me that maybe the eczema will disappear as quickly as it came, the more realistic side of me tells me that I'm now on a path of managing it, rather than curing it.

Mack wants a palace for her new puppy

I have wanted a dog since childhood but it is only now, in my late 30s, that I feel ready to commit to taking on such a responsibility.   I have spent months researching dog breeds, dog care, visiting Rescue Centres and browsing "Puppy For Sale" ads (which has certainly cut into my home and beauty online shopping time!) and finally, in a week's time my new baby will be here with me and my family.  A cute little 11-week old Chihuahua cross Yorkie puppy.
A puppy haul post is to follow very soon.  But in the meantime, I wanted to share my prep work for puppy's living space in the first few months while she settles in and gets trained.

May on home decor

You know you're growing up when shopping for cushions and vases takes over from shopping for shoes and bags... I distinctly remember this happening to me the minute I realistically thought about buying my first home.

Several years later, I happily combine all shopping missions, but a recent house move has reignited my love for home décor so I thought I would share a few of my favourite purchases with you.

There are certain things that make a house a home. This is my take on those. Do let me know yours - I'm always on the look out for new things!

Mack on Five Guys (the Restaurant that is…)

After a few weeks of trying to eat more healthily as per our New Year’s resolutions, May and I decided that we deserved a treat and we headed on down to our local Five Guys restaurant, after hearing the rumours about “The Best Burgers Ever” from May’s other half.

Mack is devastated: Memebox ends international shipping

It is a sad, sad time.  Memebox have announced that from February 10th they will only be shipping to US, China and Korea and they are ending all other international shipping.  I feel like a baby who has had its comfort blanket snatched away.  It is depressing to know that something that suited me so perfectly and which I felt so passionate about, will no longer be directly available to me as a UK resident.

May reviews Montagne Jeunesse masks

Like Mack, I love to treat myself to a face mask at least once a week. I have a couple of favourites but also love having in a selection of Montage Jeunesse masks so that I have options and can pick the one that I feel like using each time.  I remember using these as a teenager, and still love picking through the choices today.

These masks are readily available in most pharmacies and supermarkets and cost around £1. You can also order directly online (currently with free delivery over £15). If you're sparing with them, you can just about make each sachet last for 2 masks, which makes them even more of a bargain.

The company claims that its products are cruelty-free and made with natural ingredients.  All ingredients are listed on the website.
