Mack and May's traditional wedding anniversary gift ideas - the first 5 years

photo of wedding organiser wedding certificate and horseshoeAs both of us have been married for over 5 years, we thought it would be fun to share our ideas for wedding anniversary gifts for your partner (or to drop subtle hints about you might like to receive yourself).

Each anniversary from year 1 to 15 and then every 5 years from there have traditional gift meanings and we have spent many an hour searching around for something suitable to fit the appropriate theme each year so keep reading to have a look at what we found...or wish we had found.

There are also 'modern' themes for each year which you can find easily with a quick look online, and the US has different themes to the UK. We've looked at UK only because, well, we live there!

First anniversary gift - paper

There are plenty of choices for this one and you can easily find something whatever your budget. Gift ideas range from a paperback book or cinema tickets to plane tickets for a dream holiday or season tickets for a favourite football team. We also love the vintage playing card framed words, like the one shown below - you can chose from plenty of others from around £55 for phrases such as "I love you".

Second anniversary gift - cotton

A cotton gift doesn't have to be boring. How about a 100% cotton T-shirt personalised with a sweet message for your partner or a bouquet of cotton roses. We think these quirky his and hers Sole Mate set of socks for £28 make a unique and fun gift!

Third anniversary gift - leather

Apart from the more obvious exchange of a leather wallet, purse or handbag, you could surprise your partner to a romantic weekend getaway by packing a beautiful leather overnight bag for you both (such as this one) and adorn it with with cute personalised leather luggage tags like these.

Fourth anniversary gift  - flowers or fruit

May admits to stretching this one about as far as is possible and interpreting 'fruit' to mean 'Apple TV' - still, it went down very well with Mr May and is still in use on a regular basis today. Second on the ideas list, and certainly cheaper, was a fruit tree for the garden, but we were about to move at the time so that wouldn't have had quite the lasting appeal that an anniversary gift ideally would...

We also love the idea of receiving a pretty floral scarf (like this one from Oliver Bonas) or flower-related jewellery or perfume such as one of the Marc Jacobs Daisy scents, available from next.com and elsewhere.

Fifth anniversary gift - wood

A simple idea (if you are good at woodwork or know someone who is) would be to take a simple cube of wood with each of the 6 sides etched with your names, wedding date, "I love you...." "...more than ever" and a cute message that is personal to you, then gift wrap the cube in a beautiful box.   Alternatively, you might like this Personalised Rustic Birch Wood Vase from notonthehighstreet.com or a print of a love-related quote in a wooden frame, such as the Dr Seuss quote which May shows in this home d├ęcor post.
